During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many pipe organs were installed in churches and concert halls, most with pedals, often replacing earlier instruments without pedals. Reed organs graced the parlors of many homes, and were popular choices for smaller churches. American composers met the demands of a growing body of organists with a quantity of music for the instrument, ranging from instruction volumes and collections of modest pieces to virtuoso display pieces. Much of this music, long forgotten, has been rediscovered and reissued. This session will explore this repertory and its relevance to performance and teaching.
